Outraged at the obvious attempt to side step a serious public health threat, congressional members Rosa DeLauro and Louise Slaughter are calling for Foster Farms to be shut down:
Burying news late at night on a holiday weekend may be a time-honored tradition by Washington spin doctors, but it is a shameful way to protect public health. We have been saying for months that tainted chicken does not belong on the grocery stores shelves or the dinner tables of American families. How many more people will fall ill, or even be hospitalized, before USDA does the right thing and cracks down on companies that threaten our families' health and safety?
According to NBC News, Representatives DeLauro and Slaughter have introduced legislation that would require the USDA to recall meat, poultry, and other products that are contaminated with pathogens that can cause serious illness or death, or that are resistant to two or more antibiotics. Currently, the USDA does not have the authority to issue mandatory food recalls or to shut down noncompliant slaughter plants.
As undercover investigations by Mercy For Animals have proven time and again, factory farms are breeding grounds for deadly diseases as well as unconscionable animal abuse. Thankfully, it is easy to safeguard your own health and reduce the needless suffering of animals by transitioning to a humane vegan diet.
