Investigation into Pork Supplier for Top Grocers Rocks the World

kimberly press conference.bin.jpgMFA Canada’s undercover investigation at Puratone, a pork supplier to Sobeys, Superstore/Loblaws, Metro, and Walmart Canada, has garnered massive media attention and raised awareness about the unconscionable suffering of pigs behind the closed doors of Canada’s factory farms.

The media frenzy started with an exclusive story on CTV’s renowned investigative program W5, followed by additional in-depth coverage in the Toronto Star, on CTV National, and on CBC National. From there, the shocking undercover investigation went viral and was seen by millions of people worldwide.

From national and international media to local print outlets, from TV stations to radio stations, here is a roundup of just some of that coverage.

While all of the cruelty to pigs at this pork supplier for Sobeys, Superstore/Loblaws, Metro, and Walmart Canada is unnecessary and intolerably cruel, subjecting intelligent and social animals to a lifetime of confinement in crates so small they are virtually immobilized is one of the worst forms of institutionalized animal abuse in existence.

Gestation crates are considered to be so cruel, in fact, that they have been or are being phased out in nine US states, Australia, New Zealand and the entire European Union. In North America, more than 40 companies, including Safeway, Costco, and Tim Hortons, are requiring their suppliers to eliminate gestation crates.

Grocers have both the power and the ethical responsibility to say “no” to supporting cruelty to animals by immediately adopting policies that require all of their pork suppliers to phase out cruel gestation crates.

Please click here to urge Sobeys, Superstore/Loblaws, Metro, and Walmart Canada to prohibit the use of gestation crates in their supply chains.

As MFA Canada works to expose and end the suffering of animals at the hands of the meat, egg and dairy industries, consumers still hold the greatest power of all to prevent the needless suffering of farmed animals by adopting a healthy and humane vegetarian diet.
