Tragedy struck a Canadian pig barn Monday night when a raging fire engulfed it, killing thousands of pigs.
The barn belonged to Olymel, Canada's second-largest pork producer.
According to Chief Barry Hooper, a fire department volunteer who arrived on the scene, it was impossible to get inside the building: "There was just too much smoke," he said. "Pretty well the whole building was involved in smoke and fire."
One can only imagine the terror and suffering these animals experienced as the flames worked their way through the barn.
But even without fires, life is hell on earth for pigs on factory farms. Many are kept in cruel gestation crates
wire cages barely larger than their own bodies
for nearly their entire lives.
