A new study from the University of California is the first of its kind to provide evidence that lifestyle changes, including switching to a healthy vegetarian diet, can actually reverse aging at the cellular level.
The study, which examined 35 men with prostate cancer who adopted a healthier lifestyle, pointed to a 10 percent increase in the length of their "telomeres"--the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. Telomeres shorten during the aging process, and longer telomeres are associated with youth.
While this may be the first time that vegetarianism has been clinically shown to reverse the aging process, plant-based diets have long been heralded by medical professionals and scientists the world over for preventing, halting, and even reversing a host of illnesses from diabetes and heart disease to even cancer.
