Blech! Chicken Packaging Could Also Make You Sick

Three-fourths of chicken sold in stores in the U.K. is contaminated with campylobacter bacteria and can cause food poisoning, reported the Daily Mail earlier this week.

“Campylobacter poisoning affects 280,000 people a year and up to 80 percent of cases are caused by eating contaminated poultry, stated the article. “The bacteria cause acute diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and fever.

But it’s not just the chicken inside the package that can make you sick: “Crucially, keep in mind that the outside of the plastic packaging of a supermarket chicken may harbor the same bugs as an infected bird.

That’s right. Even the outside of the packaging (and the things it comes into contact with) can be contaminated with dangerous bacteria that can cause serious illness with sometimes fatal complications for children and the elderly.

Not only does eating chicken endanger your health; it also subjects chickens on modern farms to cruelties few of us can even imagine, including extreme confinement and mutilations without painkillers.

With all of the delicious mock meats on the market, there’s never been a better time to ditch chicken.
